Foster and enrich Jewish living in Western Connecticut

Our Community

Temple Sholom, New Milford, CT

For over 66 years, Temple Sholom has served as a home of living Judaism in Litchfield County. Our informal history dates to the early 1900s, as newly arrived Jewish residents discussed liturgy while schmoozing in Joseph Golden’s Dry Goods Store. In the early to mid-20th century, with New Milford’s growing Jewish population, people opened their homes for services and later neighborhood churches lent their facilities. In 1959, Temple Sholom was formally established and by 1971 had built our current facility on Route 7.

Today, Temple Sholom is a welcome and welcoming site for Judaism within the greater New Milford area. While we identify with the Reform Movement of Judaism as a congregation (through the URJ) and our rabbi was ordained by its seminary (at HUC-JIR), we are “just Jews” seeking a meaningful and relevant Judaism to deepen our connection with one another, our rich heritage, and the people and land of Israel. At last count, we have over sixty member households.  Our doors are open to all who seek connection with the Jewish community.
