The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus (1883)

America the Beautiful by Katherine Lee Bates (1895, 1911)

Some of these documents may be well known to you from high school history or elsewhere in your life … and others, newer. I believe that texts like these comprise sacred scripture of this great nation. We will use the same skills with which we investigate Torah to see what these texts have in store for us – and where we fit into them as American Jews.

May our engagement with them yield to deeper commitment to upholding the highest aspirations and values as have been set forth by the Founders of this country and the myriads of bright minds who came before us.
